The People Need Light

Mr Sun, my genre-inclusive omnivorous improvisatory string band with fiddler Darol Anger, guitarist Grant Gordy, and bass player Ethan Jodziewicz, has released our debut record on Compass Records. I have to say that I’m proud of it: it’s got personality, it takes risks, and it’s full of joy. I’m glad this music has made it out into the world, and would love for you to hear it: http://compassrecords.com/album.php?id=1083

We got a nice review in Bluegrass Unlimited (and I think our review is proof this month that it really is unlimited!). Check it out here if you like: http://bluegrassmusic.com/content/2015/reviews/mr-sun-people-need-light/

New record in the works!

Hello from London! I’m here wandering around wide-eyed on my way up to teach at the Sore Fingers bluegrass camp in the countryside. I’ve heard so much about this camp for years, and of course heard so much about this country for even longer: it’s a pleasure getting to see it all with my own eyes now, and it’s really great to connect with the folk-music inclined people over here. Year end wrap up / ramp up

Hello from day two of a tour with two of my favorite folk musicians, Brittany Haas and Owen Marshall. Our first gig was a taxing two blocks from my house, and today’s commute will be at least double that. But after the pedestrian phase of tour ends we’ll work our way down to NC, via MA, NY, and VA. I’m feeling lucky to get to create some music with these two. They’re both absolute masters of their crafts (old-time fiddle and DADGAD guitar, respectively) and it’s been fun to find the middle ground between the old-time, celtic, and bluegrass worlds that we each more or less call home.

Year’s end has got me looking back over the last year, and I can’t help but feel grateful. Since parting ways with the Gibson Brothers I’ve gotten to try out various projects (more…)

New directions

Well, all good things must come to an end, and it’s now time for me to part ways with the Gibson Brothers. I’ve been a lucky man to get to know, play, travel and work with Leigh, Eric, Clayton, and Mike, and am proud of the music and records we’ve made, and the awards and accolades we’ve won in these past four and half years. I’ve learned a lot in the time I spent with them, and am grateful that we got the chance to share the same path for a while. I wish them the very best. (more…)

Winter goings ons. Or is it going ons? Goings on?

In any event, stuff is happening this winter. I’ve been working on an instrumental record in collaboration with Darol Anger, Courtney Hartman, Lukas Pool and Sharon Gilchrist. With such a tasteful cast of characters to play with the tunes (which include some old time numbers, Darol Anger originals, a cajun wild card and one of mine) just play themselves. The record, though, doesn’t seem to just name itself. Whatever it ends up being called, I’m really looking forward to sharing it with the world. (more…)
